It is an evolutionary development of the Environ® Roll-CIT™ medicol needling procedure. Normal medical needling uses 3 mm needles to penetrate deeper into the skin, usually causing bruising and swelling. The micro-needling procedure, however, uses needles that only penetrate to a maximum of 1 mm, causing minimal swelling and modest to no bruising. Microneedling allows you to return to work the day after treatment with no outward signs other than some flushed skin similar to that caused by exposure to the sun. The procedure consists of a series of six micro-needling sessions carried out at intervals ranging from one week to one month, depending on the required degree of improvement.
A major advantage of micro-needling is that it can be used for a number of conditions and body locations: lax skin or wrinkles on the face, upper lip lines, neck, decollete, arms, abdomen, buttocks and legs. It is also used to treat shallow acne scars and stretch marks. Surgical needling (3mm) is appropriate for deeper scars. Micro-needling causes microscopic breaks in the blood vessels immediately below the surface layer of the skin (epidermis). This action releases blood platelets that are responsible for blood clotting when, for example, a blood vessel has been opened.
The blood platelets release a series of growth factors that promote the production of collagen, elastin, growth factors and other substances. In turn, collagen and elastin help to tighten and smooth the skin. We therefore need to boost this chain of events in order to promote as much elastin and collagen production as possible. This all occurs at a microscopic level. Collagen production can be boosted by preparing the skin with Vitamin A prior to the microneedling treatment. An enhanced state of collagen and elastin production is then maintained by continuing the skin care regime through six sessions.
Vitamin A acts on a DNA group of some 1,000 genes and, among its many actions, stimulates the production of collagen. While vitamin A activates the factories for collagen and elastin, normal collagen cannot be produced without vitamin C.Vitamin C applied topically is therefore an essential co-factor to be applied with the vitamin A.
Environ products have also been designed to deliver high doses of vitamin C that penetrate the skin cells and induce high levels of vitamin C necessary fa produce larger amounts of collagen. Vitamin C itself also stimulates the production of collagen through DNA activity.
A topical anesthetic cream is then applied to the skin. The area is usually covered with a thin film to ensure effective skin anesthesia. Anesthesia takes about 30 minutes. Once anesthesia has fully developed over the treatment area, the physician will start the micro-needling process. The patient may feel the roller working on the skin and some people are aware of a small sensation but this should not be painful.
Normal skin care regime should continue both day and night. The patient will easily be able to return to work and normal social life the day after the treatment. About 10 days after the procedure, the skin will become more radiant.
